It was about ten o'clock at night when I went outside the house, on one hand I carried a folding chair, in the other a glass of apple flavor soda. It had been announced a meteor shower tonight, and I wanted to see the show, I put the saddle on the wet grass and sat comfortably in the cold night air, waiting with excitement for the spectacle to start.

It was cold and the wind was blowing slightly cooling my body, but it wasn't uncomfortable, yet nobody in my family wanted to accompany me. Not for the cold or humid air, simply they didn't show the same interest as me, I could not blame them, the sky in the city was depressing, only the moon highlighted easily. The stars were hard to see, only the constellation of Orion was clearly visible in the sky, next to it was Sirius shining brightly, as if it wanted to outshine their peers with it's light. Of the innumerable stars that exist in the sky, only those few were still trying to shine, to exist for a city that had forgotten them. The classic scene from the movies, with a dark sky full of countless bright spots had been extinguished.

The pollution covers the entire city, making the sky glows with an orange tinge, and the few bright stars can easily be counted by hand. I know the chances of seeing a shooting star is scarce, and even more under this sky, hostile to those ephemeral inhabitants of the sky. However, this does not reduce my interest, I close my eyes trying to remember that day in my childhood when I was captivated by the starry sky.

My memory goes back a few years ago, a cold winter day when my father had decided to take us on  vacation to the countryside, we spend the night in a nice cabin near the mountains, the trip was uneventful as the rest of the day so much that it has almost faded from my mind.

I remember how the night fell, a deep darkness enveloped the cottage, my sister and I wanted to go out and make a fire, my father and my mother heartedly accepted the idea and we went out into the darkness of the night, we were sitting there on a couple of logs waiting for our fathers to lit the fire. The cold soaked to the bone and my eager child body began to lose patience, I instinctively turn my head up, only to be stunned by the picture that unfolded before my eyes, a starry sky like no one I had ever seen in my life. The sky was full of lights of different sizes and colors, there were shades of blue, red and even purple. A bright cloud that ran through the sky from one side to another, "what are all those lights?" I ask innocently, and then was forever shaped my love for the stars that inhabit the sky.

"John, you must enter the house, mama says it's too late" I hear the voice of my little sister, taking me out of my remembrances.

"It's a shame, she was too young at that time" I said to myself, she had forgotten the beauty that rose above our heads.

I raise the chair where I was sitting and finished drinking the last few drops of soda resting on the bottom of my glass, I cross the threshold of the door a little disappointed, for a last moment I turn to the outside watching the orange sky, where a thin but brilliant trace of light appears and disappears in an instant, just at the place where I had fixed my sight, a slight smile crosses my face and I close the door.
A little story I wrote, I'm trying new things so try to write in first person, I hope you like it.

This story is inspired by true events, really as a kid I was once took a trip to the camp and saw the most beautiful skies you can imagine, I saw the Milky Way and thousands of stars, the sky was so clear that even one could see some communications satellites.

It is a shame that in most of the cities where we live, we can not see the starry sky, and all that beauty is hidden from our eyes.

excellent! i love the details, and the simplicity is excellent--it packs a powerful punch even in a short length. Great work!!
